October 29 Welsh Lib Dem leadership hustings for WalesJenny Randerson AM Kirsty Willaims AM
Fair green future
Dyfodol teg, dyfodol gwyrdd Release/Rhyddhau: 28/10/2008 Contact/Cyswllt: Gareth Price 07976 898285 Embargo: none Welsh Lib Dem leadership hustings visit each region of Wales
Candidates to become the new leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats will contest five official hustings as part of the selection process, the party announced today.
The hustings will take place in each Assembly electoral region, while avoiding the home constituencies of either candidate who has declared an interest in running.
Dr Alan Butt Philip, lead European Candidate, will chair four of the five hustings (except the one in Aberystwyth).
He said: “I’m sure members in every region will be keen to see the candidates debating with one another, and like me, will want to hear the arguments.
“Every paid up member of the Welsh Liberal Democrats has an equal say in the choice of leader, so these hustings could have a major impact on who succeeds Mike German when the votes are counted in December.
”Having an all-female contest for the leadership is a first in Welsh and British Politics – and a rarity across Europe! Lapsed members, or supporters who have never taken the final step to become members, can still join – all members signed up before November 1 have a vote in this historic election.”
Hustings venues and dates:
Saturday 15th November
North Wales 12.30 – The Gallery, Glyndwr University (formerly NEWI), Wrexham http://www.newi.ac.uk/en/Contactus/Howtofindus/ Thursday 20th November
South Wales West 7.30pm – The Village Hotel, Fabian Way, Swansea, SA1 8QY Notes: The nomination period opened on October 13 and closes on November 3. Ballot papers will be send out on November 21, with the count on December 8. Two candidates have declared their intention to stand. Their websites can be seen here:

Hello there
It has been six months since the local elections and I have to ask – Have you seen a difference? Has Rhyl become a better place to live, work or bring up children? Are our older residents happier or safer? Personally I haven’t noticed that West Rhyl has got any cleaner or seen any significant benefits for the people who live here. Have you?
If your answer to these questions is ‘No’ then you now have another chance to vote in a better Town Councillor. Once again Labour was voted in despite their failures of the past and once again they’ve let us down. If you have any doubt that this is a fact just look around you.
I believe you deserve better. I’m the Liberal Democrat candidate in the forthcoming by-election for Town Councillor that’s being held on 13 November and I want to help you to ensure that West Rhyl is a better, safer place for all of us. Why not make it an unlucky 13 for Labour and vote for me to represent you on the Town Council.
I work out on these streets every day and I see all the same problems you do. The same problems affect all of us and I care about trying to make a difference for you the good people living here.
Please help make me the first Liberal Democrat to represent this area. It’s easy to do – all you have to do is take 5 minutes to call into Wellington Community Centre on 13 November and vote.
If you’re not registered you can call free on 0800 1972 208 to register and make sure you have your say.
Don’t leave it to others – your vote counts and could make all the difference!

Dyfodol teg, dyfodol gwyrdd Dear Sir Recent events, as reported in your newspaper, have brought to the fore the issue of derelict buildings in West Rhyl. Is it not a fact that the Council have both the necessary legislation and power to address this problem? I can't understand why years can go by with nothing being done. It is my opinion that the Council should instruct the necesssary Council Dept to take action to make landlords/owners bring these properties up to an acceptable state of repair. The properties on West Parade that back onto the coach park on Crescent Road, for example, are in a very poor condition. There are businesses operating from these buildings and, whilst they look reasonably ok from the front, the rear views are a disgrace. These views are the first sight visitors arriving by coach get of Rhyl - dillapidated and disgraceful properties surrounding an equally disgraceful coach park. Might I suggest that the people we have elected to represent us should do their job and instruct the officers our taxes pay for to get this problem sorted out. If we are to move forward in Rhyl we need our councillors and officers to work as a team to achieve the necessary result. Yours Colum McCormack Liberal Democrat Candidate for West Rhyl Town Council October 10 POST OFFICE CARD ACOUNT “ESSENTIAL” TO MAINTAIN NETWORK
MORE POST OFFICE CLOSURES COULD SOON FOLLOW
POST OFFICE CARD ACOUNT “ESSENTIAL” TO MAINTAIN NETWORK
Only days after the news that 52 post offices will close across North Wales – Lib Dems are warning that further closures could soon be just around the corner.
Lib Dem Parliamentary spokesman Mark Young is urging the government to award the new Post Office card account contract (POCA) to Post Office Ltd to protect the network from being further decimated.
The current card is used by 4m people every week to access pensions and benefits at the Post Office.
Young said: “It is essential to maintain confidence and support for the Post Office network that this contract is renewed and the decision is taken quickly.
“After the disappointing outcome of the current round of closures up to 25% more of local branches could be closed if the government removes sub-postmasters’ right to handle state pensions and benefits payments.
“The Government must pay far greater heed to the effects the closure of post offices have on a community - nearly 8 out of 10 people feel that the closure of their local post office would present a loss of essential local services.
“This is yet another example of an over centralised Government entirely out of touch with local communities.”
Eleanor Burnham, Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales added: “It is astonishing that the Government seems intent on destroying a service which is of such great value to so many people across my region.
“The post office card account offers an accessible and affordable way for thousands of people in the area to receive their benefits, yet the Government is proposing to axe it.
“Without the vital revenue stream from the post office card account, the Government is further undermining the long term viability of the post office network meaning that even more than the 3,500 post offices already closed by Labour will be put out of business.” ENDS
October 09 Your shoot season check list & a MORI hunting poll1. Your shooting checklist for the season 2. MORI breaks rules over hunting poll 3. Letts lets rip at Alun Michael 4. Cheltenham Countryside Raceday 5. Write to the Chancellor - cut the VAT 1. Your shooting checklist for the season To coincide with the start of the pheasant season, our Game-to-Eat campaign has launched a series of six game cooking web films alongside celebrity chef Phil Vickery. Phil's films, which you can view here, complement a wealth of other facts, figures and ideas produced by the Countryside Alliance for the shooting community.
This advice is designed to be helpful, but let's never forget the camaraderie, laughter and challenges of our days in the field. May I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable season and I look forward to reporting shooting and game's even greater success next year. 2. MORI breaks rules over hunting poll An investigation by the British Polling Council has found that MORI broke the 'Objects and Rules' of the Council over the publication of a poll commissioned by anti-hunting groups. The MORI research was carried out for the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), the League Against Cruel Sports and the RSPCA, and partial results were published on 17th February 2008. An IFAW press release included a quote from MORI founder Sir Robert Worcester who was also listed as a contact. The press release did not include any details of the question which was asked. The anti-hunting movement may be desperate to claim support for its failing legislation, but in failing to publish full details of the survey on its website MORI has broken the clear rules of the British Polling Council. 3. Letts lets rip at Alun Michael In his new book, "50 People Who Buggered Up Britain", the Daily Mail's peerless sketchwriter Quentin Letts offers his own roll call of the 50 prime suspects he blames for wrecking our country. One of Letts' culprits is Alun Michael - a figure with whom followers of hunting's history will be all too familiar. This extract was published in the Daily Mail on 8th October 2008: "On hunting, he got his way. Ill-informed, emotive arguments defeated common sense. But he still looked flea-bitten as he led the canter towards the ban. He still looked miserable, mangy, weak." 4. Cheltenham Countryside Raceday This year will see the 21st Countryside Raceday at Cheltenham. The Raceday, Friday 14th November, will spearhead the three-day Open Meeting and provide a unique blend of top-class racing and entertainment based around countryside activities. Proceeds will be shared between the Countryside Alliance and the County Air Ambulance. 5. Write to the Chancellor - cut the VAT The Countryside Alliance has been calling for a Cut in VAT on maintenance and home improvement work which would help the Government achieve its target of cutting carbon emissions by 60% by 2050. It would also benefit millions of UK homeowners by getting rid of cowboy builders, helping those who cannot afford vital repairs to their homes, bringing our empty properties back into use and protecting the countryside. |
